So after a few months of lurking various forums, reading peoples posts etc, I've started itching to try my hand at oc'ing , itching to get better than 17*** on 3dmark, here are a few questions. :D

Give me an educated guess, what kind of oc do you think I could/should pull with this setup? (see sig) I'm sure I'd need some better cooling http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=35-186-105&depa=0 = <what im currently using> got that fan just cuz it was so quiet. It ought to work for a mild oc however as my temps stay under 45 at load temps, I haven't even put artic silver 5 on yet, still using generic paste.

most people who are ocing are using somewhere around a mobile ~2500 for the base cpu. Wll the fact that I have a barton 3200 be good for ocing or worse? or will that even make a difference unless I get some beastier cooling?

When I changed processors, I needed to reinstall windows. Why is it that when insanely oc'd you don't need to reinstall? Is it the chip itself that matters to windows moreso than the speed?

I haven't touched the ram because I remember people saying that amd's looove 1-1 ratios on speed when it comes to cpu and ram. Would the gains be worth it to break the 1-1?

Thanx!

Hey would it be worth it to take off my 9800 pro fan and put some as5 on the chip? I'll get a better fan in a month or so, but this is just till then ;)

I know nothing about AMD

Reseating your 9800 pro with AS5 is a good idea....i did it but really need a better fan on it, for a decent overclock.

id start w/ your cpu, then once you get the hang of it you can study up on ram and stuff. anyway, that is kind of weak... id recommend this http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-106-035&depa=1
its a little noisy, especially when you have it cranked, but it is adjustable. what you need to do to overclock is get into your bios, and first just look around the setup, get a little familiar w/ it. then to overclock it is as simple as increasing the multiplier. at first. the default multiplier for your processor is probably 10.5. you could probably just put it on 11, then burn it in. i recommend running pcmark04 about 3-4 times to make sure it is stable, then let it run for a day or so at that setting, then try 11.5 and so on. make sure you keep an eye on the heat, i recommend MBM5. anyway, after that it might get a little hairier, because you have to step it up more gradually.

what the multiplier does is determine the clock speed of the cpu. it just multiplies the bus frequency (probably 200) by the multiplier to get the clock speed. what you will eventually have to do is turn up the multiplier, but turn down the external frequency, just to get the right clock speeds. you might have to increment by about 10-15 mhz at a time as you burn it in.

need any more help, just ask! 8)

:( I just found out that 95% of the xp3200 chips will have the multipliers locked, which means I'm stuck with raising the fsb for an oc.. now I wish I'd spent $30 extra for the 64 line of cpus.

I'm almost tempted to buy a mobile just so I can play haha, if I got that volcano I could probably get the htz lots faster than +3200 speeds anyways  . my mobo is designed for ocing and I'm letting all of its glory go to waste!

tx for the help man :headbang:

Yeah unfortunately AMD announced they were doing this a while ago, and doing it because a lot of places were taking 2400+s and OCing them and selling them in PCs as 3000+s. Tehy kept the 64 bit unlocked because they figure someone willing to buy 64 bit is enthusiast enough to know if the processor they got is a lower model overclocked.

are people that are getting mobiles up to 2.5ghz + using air cooling such as the volcano? or water cooling?

oh and btw, do you think the "pencil" trick would work to unlock the multipliers on my 3200?

I don't think the pencil trick will work.

basically you would bridge some connections on the L1 or L3 part of the cpu. You would just draw a line with a pencil and voila, it was done.

I just researched unlocking the multiplier on the xp chips, looks pretty risky :( you have to actually scrape a part of the cpu off, then link the bridge together. don't think I'll try it till im getting ready to make a new computer.

Yeah, i've tried that before on on 900Mhz Duron and fried the hell out of it. But that was some good fun, the pc wasn't mine.
