my friend has a P4 2.4 and we were thinking about overclocking his system. we bought these nice OCZ dual channel 3200 rams (2x512) for him since he had these crappy PC2100s. anyways long story short, now we can't lower the multiplier and raise the fsb. the fsb is set to 100. I thought maybe i could raise it to 200 or even more (since he has good mobo and rams) and lower the multipliers (from 24) and maybe we can get something like 3.0 MHz out of it. but like i said the multipliers are locked. I've seen some crazy overclocking here on Intel especially i like to know how daytona overclocked his 2.4 or 2.6 to 3.4, but since I don't know **** about intel I need your help. thanks, and here's his rig:
mobo: P4P800-e DLX
cpu: P4 2.4 Northwood (v-core: 1.57v)
memory: PC3200 OCZ, 2x512 MB
video card: 9800pro
psu: 350W (no name)

you dont unlock it.

raise the FSB some keeping and eye on temps and such. If all goes well raise the voltage some too.....what kind of cooling is he runing?

With good cooling those 2.4A's can hit 3.4 easy.

What?s your obsession with unlocking the multiplayer anyway lol?

Intel has been locked for about 10 years now only recently have some of the newer bios on the new chips where you are able to unlock it.

lol I don't know, I just like it unlocked  anyways, the multiplier is at 24 right now, so we really can't raise the fsb by a good amount. but what's bothering me is his ocz dual channel DRAM frequency is at 133, in my own bios fsb is directly related to ram frequency, plus i know it's increasing the fsb that gives a nice boost in performance, but like i said because of the 24 multiplyer we can't do anything. but I'll try flashing the bios to the newest version (because I've also heard some of these new asus boards can unlock the multiplier or something) anyways thanks again.

Have you tried getting some more outta yours D?

Have you tried getting some more outta yours D? i have 2.4B not A :P most i ever got out of mine was 3440 i think.

Yes you can the multipliter has NOTHING to do with it. eveytime you raise the FSB up one from 100 to 101 you now have a 404fsb @2424 raise it up from 101 to 110 you have 440fsb @ 2640 ok?

you dont need to unlock nothing and no way is a 2.4a going to beable to unlock ever thats an old CPU then new prescott E's i think are the ones that are unlocking.

get better cooling raise it up tell its unstable then raise the voltage with it. i bet you can get it up to 125-135 easy. 500fsb@ 3000mgz/540fsb@3240..

hell my P3 has a muli of 8 doesnt mean its **** for overclocking~

Why didn't u keep it there? :? Problems?

Was runing a nice amount of voltage thu it. Dont want to risk it when it really isnt much of a differnce in performence. just put it there for benchs

to get it from 3206@1.6v then 1.69v for 3440 so its kinda a big jump.

just an update: I did find the new bios that apparently unlocks the multiplier and for his mobo (P4P800e-DLX) the link is: http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/selectftp.aspx?l1_id=1&l2_id=15&l3_id=19&m_id=1&f_name=P4P81019.zip~zaqwedc
(look at the description at the bottom) but here's the funny thing (well not really funny) my friend called me today and told me that the heatsink on his mobo chipset has molten!!! :? apparently due to choosing 10% overclocking in BIOS. but I told him there is definitely something wrong with mobo or something since you can choose 20% and even 30% overclocking in bios and that is one of the FEATURES that the bios originally has (they wouldn't put it there if they thought it would melt the heatsink!) anyways, he's still under the warranty

Lol nothing wrong with the motherboard if you are melting stuff its the person working on it.

Told u ..........u need better cooling and no u can?t unlock his muilix6000

Probably have stock cheap thermal compound also.

yeah, well let this be a lesson for all of my friends who are constantly mocking me for all the fan cases that i buy

Daytona

not fan cases that he needs he needs decent heatsink and fan and some artic silver 5. and do it right. 10% OC is nothing even at stock it should be able to handle it he F'd somthing up.

I dont use the easy OC in bios or whatever its called but ive had mine well over 30% and never melted anything.

what was his temps at? or he probably didnt even have a temp gauge on did he?

Reve

I do know that he was checking his cpu temp constantly cause i told him not to let it go over 60 (I don't know if he did it though, i'll ask him tomorrow  ) it wasn't the heatsink on the cpu that was molten it was the little one on the chipset of the motherboard, a nice 92mm cpu fan does keep the mobo heatsink cool but i thought the overall air circulation of the case was more important.

that chipset can run 800FSB stock he was runing it at no more 410...that should never be a problem..... he has a 2.4A right?

Reve

yeah I think so, 2.4A 400 has fsb right? so I guess yeah that's the one because he told me it's basically the crappiest one. but i totally agree with you, i actually told him not to easy overclock (or whatever the name is) the bios because i don't know exactly what 10%,20% overclocking does. but it is kinda weird, if any damage should have been done, i assume it should have been done to the cpu not the mobo
