View Full Version : R520 with 32 pipelines!!!
http://www.megagames.com/news/html/hardware/atinewboardwith32pipelines.shtml
The latest information released from Canada regarding ATIs monstrous R520 board, also known as Fudo
ATI claims that its new range of boards will carry in excess of 300 million transistors meaning that, at least in theory, it will be able to feature 32 pipelines.
ATI is to have all boards with 32 pipelines but to restrict the first few versions to 24 functioning ones and to gradually introduce the full 32 enabled versions when market conditions and competitor products demand them.
the competition is just getting tougher and tougher :headbang:

haha time to show nvidia whos boss. two of those things running in ATI's upcoming SLI= WOW!!! haha could you imagine that? Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 running at 300fps in all settings maxed, full AA and AF at 1600x1200 lol. thats a bit uneccesary for sure, but good god, thats amazing. but unfortunately I wont have 500 bucks to buy one when they come out...but that will make all the current prices drop meaning I will be able to finally afford an X800XL. :headbang:

LOL I like your logic B2S. That's a frikin insane card....... .......and where did you hear that xbox2 is usin that?
Nvidia is also coming up with a new Gxx series, and they're suggesting a change from NV to G can possibly mean a whole new architecture. we have to wait a bit longer i guess

nvidia's got some hella good architecture. 128bit 6600gt smashing the 256bit 9800pro for example.. :D

actually the chipset that the XBOX2 will feature will be even more advanced than the R520. It's chipset is titled the R500, but is still more powerful than the R520, just named the R500 because it went into development first, but is specifically designed for the XBOX. It is more on par with ATI's next-next gen chip the R600, which wont be out till 2006. The R520 and R500 are 90nm chips. Muahaha for the first time in the history of games, a console will be more powerful than a PC!!! I love it! 3x 3Ghz PowerPC chips, plus this R500 chip = wow. I cant wait to see what this thing will be capable of. The only thing I dont understand is how they will be able to sell it for a reasonable price. Rumor has it that the XBOX2 WILL start at $399.99 USD. It must be coming soon because I signed up for a pre-preorder list today at EBgames. I'm the 2nd person they will call when it is available for pre-order. WOOHOO!
On the R500 XBOX2 chip:
reported to "have 10 times higher geometry and 4 times higher pixel performance compared to the RADEON X800 XT".

6600gt has what? like 2-3 years of development time over the 9800pro. What we should be paying attention to is that it took nVidia that long to make something better in the same price range, thats like lightyears in videocard development time. Another thing is that A) the 6600gt is more expensive. B) sure its 128-bit, but its GDDR3 clocked at 1Ghz, compared to the 256-bit regular DDR on the ATI clocked at 680Mhz. I firmly believe that if they made away to slap 1Ghz GDDR3 on a 9800pro it would beat the 6600gt hands down. GDDR3 ram was simply technology that would have cost ATI a ****ing fortune to put on the 9800pro when it was released.

Good post B2S & very good point below! :P

it's not right to compare 9800pro with 6600gt; I think it'd be fair if we compared something like x700 with 6600gt; in the same price range and the both came out almost at the same time. but in general I think it's true that ATI cards are clocked higher than nvidia cards. for example take 6800GT and x800XL, they're very similar but GT has a core speed of 350MHz while XL is 400MHz; but then again gt has a memory speed of 1000MHz while XL is at 980Mhz. So they're actually pretty similar and I don't know how it's even possible to compare the architecture of the cards, unless you have the schematics of the cores and know enough engineering to read them. All I know is that nvidia cards work great with fragmented codes while ATI cards are better with non-fragmented codes, and I don't even know what that means! But that somehow explains why Nvidia cards work better with OpenGL (Doom3, Call of Duty etc.) and ATI cards work better with DirectX (Half Life2 etc)
So all I really care about is the benchmarks and the price!
And just because one company is coming up with something crazy, it doesn't mean the other company is just sitting down and watching; it just means that you're most probably getting just one side of the story. Nvidia is coming up with Gxx series, a whole new architecture, ground breaking, whatever; but ATI is also coming up with Fudo, the next generation with 24 or even 32 pipelines; but again there are rumors that Nvidia is trying to implement dual-cores in their architecture... and the cycle goes on and on.

MSRP for ATI's next-gen top-of-the-line card:
$699.99
memory it will supposedly use:
2.4Ghz GDDR4?!?!?
no worries, thats how much the X800XT was at first, same with the 6800 Ultra or GT or whatever. Now you can pick up an X800XT for $350-450

The Xbox 360 (now confirmed as the official name) is going to be unveiled on MTV on May 12th. The system has a white-platinum finish and an hourglass-curve design.

hmm. could be, but doubtful. I think the big M will stick with the current color scheme. Also, that looks an awful lot like my logitec wireless controller for my XBOX, only painted white with slightly different buttons.
