Intel predicts wattage for future server chips
Server Roadmaps Sassy Sossy and woody Woodcrest and numbers galore
By INQUIRER staff: Wednesday 12 October 2005, 18:55
ROADMAPS INTEL has shared with its workstation and server partners claim that its dual core Montecito 400/533 Itanium, now numbered 9000, will be out in the first quarter of next year.
And the same recent roadmaps show that a 667MHz bus version will arrive in the second quarter, followed by the "Montvale" chip in the second half of next year.
It also reveals that the Tulsa processor which has 16MB of L3 cache is likely to arrive in the second half of year.
And there are some interesting wattage figures given for other of its enterprise chips, in particular "Sossaman" and Woodcrest.
Intel predicts its Woodcrest chip, also slated for the second half of next year, will consume less than 80 watts. The Paxville 65 nanometre processor will be at around 95 watts. The Woodcrest processor won't go faster than 2.93GHz in the second half of next year, while it will also position other of its families including Yonahs into the blade space and the ultra dense blade space.
A dual core LV version of Sossaman is predicted to arrive in Q1 of next year clocking at 2GHz and consuming 31 watts.
Like other Intel families, the server segment is getting more difficult to understand.
When Intel releases its 5020, 5030, 5040, 5050, 5060 and 5070 Xeon DPs in Q1 of next year, the clock speeds won't exceed 3.46GHz. It will introduce a an LV Xeon DP with 2MB of cache, and prices of existing Xeon chips will drop.
It's now slated to introduce Xeon MP chips with top clock speeds of 3GHz and bearing the numbers 7041, 7040, 7030 and 7020 on the 1st of November. All these numbers... ?

Fifty watt Yonah explained
No conspiracy here folks, sorry
By Charlie Demerjian: Thursday 13 October 2005, 08:24
THE NEW INTEL numbering scheme has gone public, and it is as bad as we said it would be.
While the contest results will be up shortly, there is one bit that seems to have caused no end of trouble on the message boards.
There is an E-class for Yonah that will encompass TDPs of 50 or more watts, and a T class for 25-49W. The main SKUs of Yonah are all slated to be around 31W, so they will be Ts.
The tin foil hat bunch seems to have forgotten the 'shiny side out' rule, and the CIA microwave lasers are being kept in their heads instead of bouncing harmlessly off. Translation: No, the 65nm process is not broken. Yonah has no severe problems, it will be out at 31W, and on time, to boot. The real problem behind the 50W is gaming.
In case you have been living under a rock, you will probably notice that there is a very lucrative gaming luggable notebook market out there, and the current Pentium Ms don't do terribly well in that arena. To counter that, Intel has an EE/XE variant of the Pentium M planned, and it will be at least a speed grade, hopefully two, above the top 'normal' range.
To get it that fast, Intel bumped up the power. That is why the new chips are in the 50W range, they are simply faster. Now you can go iron your hats out and re-coat them with microwave-B-gone, there is no conspiracy here. Don't forget to turn them inside out though.
If you don't, you may never catch the fact that E- is for Extreme. ?

Intel is to introduce a new processor numbering scheme when its 65nm 'Yonah' chip debuts early next year, sources from within Taiwan's motherboard maker community have claimed.
Every Yonah's model number will be prefixed with an E, T, L or U, determined by the chip's thermal design power (TDP) stats. That's followed by a 1 or a 2 to indicate the number of cores incorporated into the package, then a three-digit performance/features rating, the sources claim by way of a DigiTimes report.

Wow that's pretty cool. About time they redesigned their logo. They have such a variety of models that this is a good move on thier part.

Intel claims transistor invention will extend Moore's Law
New materials
By INQUIRER staff: Wednesday 07 December 2005, 17:27
CHIP FIRM Intel said it had cooperated with a QinetiQ research team to develop a very low power transistor that uses new materials.
QinetiQ is a British company spun off from the UK government's Ministry of Defence.
The trannie uses indium antimonide (InSb)to conduct current. The two firms have worked on InSb transistors before, but say the prototypes have a gate length of 85 nanometres, half the size of those they announced before.
Intel claimed it's the first time enhancement mode transistors have been demonstrated, and will work at about half a volt. ?

CHIP FIRM Intel told the Wall Street Journal that its dual core Yonah microprocessor, due to be released in early 2006 will consume 28 per cent less juice and perform 68 per cent better than its current Pentium M chips.
Yonah will be fashioned using Intel 65 nanometre process, and is a successor to the Pentium M family. It will come in several flavours, including a single core chip.
It will also compete with Intel's Pentium 4 chip as the soul of the firm's Viiv consumer push. Chieftain Paul Otellini is expected to launch that with a bang at next month's Consumer Electronics Show. ?

Well those 3.2E's are pulling some nice clocks, I can see why you feel no need to upgrade right now.
One thing I should tell you is that the p4C800-e is going for around $180-200 on ebay right now.? mine sold for $197.50, I sh*t you not.? also agp cards that have been discontinued are going for a very good price.? my 6800GT agp w/ doom3 went for $238, that was without the stock cooler and i admitted the card was on watercooling for 6 months.? if you sell the processor too youve pretty much got the money for a new AMD PCIe system. dont forget, you can keep your old RAM too.? you should be able to get $600 easy for your old stuff, that will pretty much pay for a dual core processor and motherboard.? youll have about $100 left over to spend on a card (so out of pocket youd probably have to devote $200 to the build).? the other great thing is that older PCIe cards are really cheap now.? I got a PCIe X800XT for $175, PCIe 6800Us are going for around $200 (i bid $175 on one that went for $180).?
im going to wait about 4-6 months then ill probably toss some cards in there running SLi, then i should be set till at least 2007.? hopefully my dualcore opteron will be enough.? should be at 2.8ghz 24/7 once i get my water cooling back up? 8)

ya i thought i remembered you saying it wouldn't be till jan / feb or something :) OC'in itch get to ya, eh?
Well my old system was a total dead end.? The funny thing is that my old AGP system amost paid for my new setup.? Ive already sold most of the components, for the cpu/mobo/vidcard i got just under $600.? The cpu/mobo/vidcard on my new setup is just under $600.? So I actually made a bit of money off my old components :)? Only thing is I had to spend $300 for 2GB of TCCD, that was all out of pocket. I still have to sell the RAM and PSU, so overall the out of pocket cost of this build will only be around $300.? But yeah, really loving my new system, and Ill be able to upgrade to SLi cards when the time is right in 2006.? Good times.
