Hey, i bought a 420W thermaltake ATX PS in preparation for my 9800pro....when i went to install the PS the connectors are different for the motherboard.....does compaq not use ATX or is some proprietary thing going on....

to be more specific the connector on the ATX Thermaltake has 2 columns less than the mobo connector and its only like 2 maybe 3 years old(P4 1.8 ) which is why i assumed the ATX would work fine.....any suggestions?? thanks

Might be. Computer manufacturers such as HP, Compaq, eMachines and others have some parts made especially for them so the only way to upgrade whould be to purchase from them. If you got a budget type system than this is probably the case, coz all motherboard manufacturers like ABit, Asus, Gygabyte, Biostar and so on, have a standard "port" to plug a PSU in.

just to follow up and let you know: yes it is proprietory and is 24 pin vs the standard ATX 20 pin.....so i guess i will head to newegg and search for a 24 pin PS

Nice! $10 is a good price too.

glad you found it. Yeah, compaqs suck sometimes, they are impossible to upgrade. I tried helping out a friend by adding some ram and a new video card to his computer, but the compaq mobo wouldn't have it. lol.

Yeah, some of them don't even have an AGP slot.
