    Default LGA1366....

I kinda have an understanding of the i5/i7 thing and the LGA1366 is supposed to be the configuration for the high end processors of the next generation. Does that necessarily mean it will be X58?

The X58 is our only LGA1366 for now, but can we expect an X59 or an X68 or X78 with the next generation of processors?

God knows I really don't NEED the quad core I'm building now, but if AC, AX, AG, TG and all the rest get hex cores, I don't want to be left out....... (Kyle will have a 7core Apple)

Just look in your crystal ball for me....

X58 is the Northbridge, and as you pointed out, right now it is the only LGA1366 board available. But I assume as tech advances new ones will be made as per the usual process of things. So we may see Xwhatever in the future. The northbridge doesn't determine the CPU, the LGA or socket type determine that. Other Northbridges will be contrived later.

there will probably be a new south bridge for the new SATA 6 and Usb 3 before a new north bridge.

south bridges have been integrated into the north bridge for some time now. i think the unofficial name is 'superchip'? lol it's all just considered a chipset now...not to mention that every motherboard manufacturer does it differently, anyway.
i do believe asus has hardware for both usb3 and sata6 already on the market...

I suppose that what I'm asking is; does it look like the 1366 will be the high end socket for the next year or two? I know the technology will march on... Cool! I also know there's really no such thing as future proofing. I'm just wondering if 1366 is likely to have a run like the 775 did.

It's is probably irrelevant anyway. I need a new computer now so it's 775, 1156, or 1366. I'm just trying to optimize my options.

go with 1366. the triple ram channel really helps in optimizing performance

I read something yesterday that said Intel would probably return to the dual channel format on their next generation chips. It was in the memory section in Tom's.

they already being that. hence the 1156. they are releasing i3 and i5 dual cores with dual channel ram format. however the 1366 with triple channel would still be the high end production line.

this is what couple other forums are referring to when people are asking which platform they should go:
If you're willing to spend the money then lga1366 is the best. Otherwise AM3 and 1156, I think they'll all be around for quite a while however I find 1156 is just a castrated 1366
