Thread: 50' VGA cable support 1920x1080?

Default 50' VGA cable support 1920x1080?

If I use this 50' VGA cable to hook up my monitor, the computer will no longer recognize the monitor (calls it a Generic non-PnP monitor), and won't let it go up to 1920x1080. But I plug it in using a 8' VGA cable then it works fine, recognizes the monitor, and displays 1920x1080. The 50' cable is pretty thick (at least twice as thick in diameter as the 8' cable). I have tried this on 4 different monitors, same results. Three of the monitors tested were LCD TVs with VGA inputs. The other was a dell 22" lcd computer monitor.

So could it be the cable doing this? If so, is there a way around this so I can actually get 1920x1080 thru this 50' cable?

beats me, but i had a similar experience as well. my conclusion. some cables are just not meant to be? but im a bit curious, why are you using a 50' long cable. the longer the cable the easier it is to break.

Media Center PC in the living room, and I want to display whats on the computer on a monitor in the kitchen, too. It's a 40 ft run.

so you tried it on 3 different monitors and none of them worked with the 50' cable? then yeah i would say it's a bad cable. longer cable tend to be less reliable since well. it's longer.

longer means more signal loss and without something to amplify it before sending it through will cause corruption/data loss in what you are sending.

Is the cable just VGA? Plain VGA won't support higher resolutions as well at that length. You usually have to get a specialized SVGA cable or go DVI. In your case you may have to go DVI and get dvi/vga adapters for the end (assuming you don't have DVI out/in). I don't think even SVGA goes over 1900x1200 at that distance.
